I know it's not a cat blog, but...

We've just had a call asking for our advice about cat food. And as lots of people have both cats and dogs, why not!
What's the best dry or wet?
And what's the difference between the pouches and the little tiny cans? Why so many formats?
Why can't you just go down the tinned fish aisle and pick up a tin of pilchards which are often cheap as chips and 100% fish? Will there be something missing?
What's the best economy, premium and super-premium brand?
Best ethical?
And, silly question, if you do feed raw - anyone out there to hold your hand and give advice? I know some cats can find raw meat without our help, but what is the ideal diet for a cat?

It's most certainly possible to raw feed cats, though they might be more
difficult to change over if they've got "addicted" to a processed feed. It's not that different to feeding a dog actually, though the bones need to be smaller! Being obligate carnivores, cats actually need a high protein diet containing meat and feeding raw is ideal.

And I'm sure the odd can of fish would go down a treat!

I've been feeding our cat frozen (well thawed) whole mice for over 5 years, and raw meat/bones for about 10 years before that. There just seem to be so many health benefits to raw, and even more so with whole prey in our experience. I describe this journey at

specifically in the post "Nature's Cat Food" but there are, and will continue to be, more posts on the subject of animal health and feeding, something very dear to my heart. As I speak, well type, I'm working on a post about green type for later today.
